The 1812 reference is clearly to the War of 1812. However: to many people “invasion” applies that the British were the aggressors in this conflict, which seems tenuous to me, considering it was the Americans who declared war on Britain in June 1812 and certainly invaded British territory (Canada) first. Granted, most Americans I know also claim victory in this conflict, which again, considering Canada was invaded first, Canada/Britain certainly did a better job of defending its territory than America did on the offensive!
Of course, the musical British Invasion essentially began with Beatlemania in 1964. While the odd British group had a #1 hit before then, it was the Beatles that cause the massive influx of British music to reach American shores.
