The Hunley is best kown today for being the first combat submarine to sink a warship. Nearly 40 feet long, she lost 21 crewmen over her three sinkings, including her inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley (after whom the ship was named).

It was considered a success as it sank the USS Housatonic on February 17, 1864 in Charleston harbor, even though it sank itself on that mission. It was in the news over the last couple of years, as restoration efforts are attempting to determine what specifically caused its sinking.
