Final Jeopardy! category: BRITISH HISTORY

Final Jeopardy! clue: On January 1, 1801 George III relinquished this royal title claimed by English monarchs since the Hundred Years’ War

What is King of France? (Courtney said “King of England”, Jeff “Defender of the Faith”, and Ken “Duke of York”)

Courtney 4000 – 3900 = 100 Jeff 14600 – 6000 = 8600 Ken 22900 – 7000 = 15900 (1-day total: $15,900)

At the time, Great Britain had just passed the Acts of Union to unite the kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland, and, wanting to make peace with Napoleon, elected at the same time to drop its claim to the French throne. It led to the Treaty of Amiens, which brought a full 14 months’ worth of peace.

As per the Jeremy Black book, “George III: America’s Last King”:

…George was the last ruler of Britain ever to use the title of ‘King of France’. This claim, first advanced by Edward III in 1340, was finally dropped from the royal style in 1801. TheCourierof 2 January 1801 noted, “The arms on the royal carriages are all altered. The fleur de lis [for France] is left out, in lieu of which the Electoral cap [for Hanover] is introduced; the shamrock [for Ireland] is also introduced in the different orders.”

  • FYI:

Jeff’s degenerative back issues, which prevent him from standing for an extended period of time, are the reason for his being seated (and why the post-game interviews are taking place at the lecterns).
