Joshua Brakhage and Susie Swithers are the challengers today for Michelle Souza, costume designer at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre, who was quite dominant at times yesterday in picking up just shy of $14,000.
I don’t normally post something like this, but I’d love to be able to interview Michelle for the blog!

Joshua had some issues with negs near the top of OF RICE & HEN, but did get a couple of $1,000-level clues! It was a good, well-paced game to open which saw all three players get in a few times! Other than that, not too much else to note! The scores at the end of 3 categories were:

Joshua had some props to Corporal Vicki from the Dallas Police Department in his interview for the police escort he got to his Jeopardy! audition. Apparently, a bunch of cars had been broken into in the hotel parking lot where he was staying and the investigation nearly caused him to miss his audition!
Back to the game, Michelle struggled a little bit, and it was Susie doing most of the ringing and talking! She found the Daily Double under BANNED! $800, with scores reading:

She bet $2,000. Her clue: With a large Catholic minority, Lebanon banned this 2003 novel that suggests Jesus was a dad Susie guessed the other one in the series and ended up at $1,600
As an aside: I always have people giving me a hard time at the pub quizzes that I host for being years-oriented. My thoughts on this have always been that knowing the years of something — in this case, the order of a similar pair of works — can point you towards the correct answer (as opposed to the incorrect one, like what happened here with Susie.)
By the end of the round, it seemed as it was Joshua was the contestant avoiding all of the pitfalls, having recovered nicely from his early negs! He had the lead at the midway point of the game!

Michelle bet just $4,000. Her clue: Naval hero Oliver Hazard Perry wrote “We have the enemy, and they are” this pronoun. She was very close to correct, but put a few too many letters on the end, and it was pretty much all over from here on out, as her score fell to $3,000.
