Yesterday, Carlos Ross finished first in quite an exciting game. (And we found out Andy dislikes New Yorkers.) No surprise once you learn he is in Rundle A, the best, in Learned League. It did my heart good to see Carlos so thrilled when he won. Today we find out he earned enough to wipe out his student loans. Here he is with today’s challengers.

Did anyone else say “cognac” for this one in Have a Drink?: “Aged for 40 years or more, Armagnac is a type of this made in France.”
I started watching this episode with my mom today. She doesn’t like to see people in the hole, so it did my heart good again when she cheered for Brock as he got back in the black. I got this triple-stumper at 1000: “This adjective describes the ‘chaperone’ in the title of a 2006 Tony-winning musical.” At the first break:

Brock talked about the poet laureate in his interview with Mr. Trebek. I told my mom I thought poetry was boring, and she thought I said I thought Brock’s job was boring! No way! As for Kaya, I can think of a lot meaner things boyfriends have done than “force” their girlfriends to do stand-up comedy.
Brock found the Daily Double of the round, in Finlandia.

Mr. Trebek pointed out that Brock had half of Carlos’ total. Brock wagered just 1000 on this clue: “One of the 2 countries that took turns controlling Finland from the 1100s to its 1917 independence.” Good for Brock for knowing this easily. I am surprised this clue was at 1000 in Finlandia, because I thought it was the easiest and it was the only one in the category I got right: “Before Finland was free, the musical work ‘Finlandia’ by this native son was banned for arousing patriotism.”
I got this triple-stumper in Guinness: “2 guys kept a rally going for over 8 hours in this indoor sport.” No one got it even after Carlos said “tennis.”
Kaya probably regretted selecting so slow – she was tearing it up in Canadian Club and seemed to be having a good time doing it, but one clue was left covered. Now we won’t know which hunk was the correct response there!

Speaking of selecting slow, Brock felt the need to read the whole category name of After I Lost the Presidential Election. But I like it when guys point their finger at the board as they select clues. He did however say, “I’ll try the same category” when he found the Daily Double there.

Mr. Trebek said Brock didn’t look happy and looked like he was under pressure. Brock said, “A little bit, Alex, thank you for bringing that up.” Mr. Trebek could be heard laughing, but they didn’t show him. Brock pointed again when he wagered 2400 on this clue: “I helped my wife run for president & later, successfully, for the Senate.” Brock knew this immediately. “Well done!” said Mr. Trebek. Now he and Carlos are tied. (Brock and Carlos, that is.) Brock sounded confident when he selected the next clue in British Novels’ First Lines. This triple-stumper was a snap for me in that category: “E.M. Forster: ‘Except for the Marabar caves…the city of Chandrapore presents nothing extraordinary.”
Kaya was looking for the Daily Double but Carlos found it in The Calendar with 3 clues left after this one, and the time warning already given.

Carlos wagered 2500 on the clue. I’d have wagered more. Here it is: “John Wilkes Booth saw himself as a dictator-slayer, so his original target date was April 13, which is this on the Roman calendar.” Carlos was wrong. 🙁 He negged on the next clue too, which was a triple-stumper, then hung his head as the beeps indicated the end of the round. Mr. Trebek said, “That’s all right Carlos, you’re still in the lead.”

The Final Jeopardy category was Asia. Asia?! Mr. Trebek said Carlos looked very happy when that category was revealed. Here’s the clue: “Consisting of a peninsula & 2 islands, it was the longest-lasting European colony in Asia: 442 years, ending in 1999.” I thought I knew this but was wrong. I expected a triple-get. Brock was wrong though and lost nothing. I said what Kaya did. She lost 3601. (Poor Brock!) Carlos too said what Kaya and I did but crossed it out and wrote the correct response. Someone started clapping immediately in the audience. Carlos wagered everything! Wow, imagine if he hadn’t crossed out his initial response. I expect he’ll win tomorrow too! “What a game! What a finish!” Mr. Trebek enthused!
I did not track my Coryat today.
