Recent Coryats:
Originally 5-28-09: 32000 (34400 without negs). I don’t know why, but GSN doesn’t appear to be showing any Jeopardy! this week. I’ve asked around on Twitter, another blog, and the message boards but no one’s responded about why.
Originally 7-23-12: 30600 (34600 without negs, which all came in Double Jeopardy). I must add, though, I’d read a thread about the “justice” Daily Double on the Sony boards the night before. The first time I played, my score was 21400 (29000 without negs). I find that hard to believe, but that’s what it says.
Remember how U.S. Cellular did me wrong late last year? Well I took up my complaint with Nebraska’s attorney general. I got a fat envelope in the mail last week from U.S. Cellular, the bottom line being they are removing those wrong charges “as a gesture of goodwill” (though they still insist the charges are valid). So I’m telling you about this as a gesture of goodwill of my own.
On to today’s show, the first of the two-day ToC final. The contestants:

I got this triple-stumper early, in 3 Last Words: “The 1939 song ‘Over the Rainbow.'” I love this category, by the way. More like this, please!
Keith found the first Daily Double today, in Name the Bible Book. It was before the first break, and the first three clues in the category were no-brainers. You might say Keith knows what he’s doing. He wagered all of his 1200. He and Colby had gotten 2 right, Kristin had gotten 4 right. Colby and Kristin had 600 and 1600, respectively. This was the clue: “(The ‘first’ part) ‘ But if they cannot contain, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn.'” A head-scratcher after the 3 easy ones? Poor Keith! He got it wrong, but of course it was early.
Kristin got one right and 2 wrong between Keith’s Daily Double and the first break. She had 1000. Keith got 2 right and Colby got one right. They had 1400 and 1600 respectively. By the end of the round, Keith had gotten 5 more right and had 4800. Kristin had gotten 3 right and one wrong and had 2400. Colby had gotten 5 right but this one wrong, in Nelson Mandela:
As you can hear, his response was accepted at first. He was negged after the commercial break. Mr. Trebek said, “…[y]ou gave F.W. DeKlerk a German middle name, Wilhelm, instead of his Dutch middle name of Willem, so we deduct 2000 from you.” So Colby had 4000 to start the round.
The round started very well for me. I had the first 15 right, sweeping World Place Names and 1990s Music. The last clue in the former was a Daily Double, and Keith found it. He’d gotten 3 right in the round and had 8000. Kristin had gotten one right and had 2800. Colby had gotten 2 right and had 5600. I was hoping Keith would wager it all, but he wagered 5000 on this clue: “The Arabic name of this Biblical town means ‘House of Meat’; the Hebrew name — ‘House of Bread.'” Keith didn’t get it.
Keith found the next Daily Double too, in Hugo Awards for Science Fiction. He’d gotten 4 right and one wrong since his last Daily Double, and had 5400. Kristin had gotten 2 right and had 5200. Colby had gotten a whopping 8 right (and one wrong) and had 14000. Keith wagered 2000 on this clue: “Damon Knight for this short story (or is it the title of a cookbook?).” Keith got it right.
Colby got 5 more right before the end of the round and had a huge lead, with 21200. Kristin got one more right and had 6400, and Keith still had 7400.
The Final Jeopardy category was American Authors. This was the clue: “In 1925 she visited a floating theater docked in North Carolina to research her next novel.” I felt like this was gettable for the whole 30 seconds, but it wasn’t. Keith and Kristin didn’t either but Colby, true to form, got it. Shall I remind you Keith is from North Carolina? Anyway he lost 2600, and Kristin lost 6000. Colby gained 1000. Their scores will be combined with tomorrow’s.
There were a couple of potential traps in today’s episode, relating adding or changing one letter in each correct response:
In Name the Bible Book: “‘And he saith unto me, seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.'”
In A Binder Full of Women: “Smile and say ‘cheese’ for this woman, who’s usually behind the camera, photographing famous folks.” (Remember when Roger Craig was negged for saying “Leibowitz”? I blogged on that episode but didn’t mention it, apparently.)
But the contestants handled it.
My Coryat today was 27800 (32800 without negs), my highest of the tournament yet. So (I hope I have this right), my average Coryat this Tournament will be higher than that of the last Tournament even if I end 7000 in the hole tomorrow.
