Andy here today with another recap! Hope your Thanksgiving was awesome!
Today’s contestants:
J! round categories:
CAN I GET A NUMBER?
ANCIENT GREEKS
“V”ERBS
SHOW BIZ STUPID ANSWERS
FEAT
OF CLAY
Some laughs on the opening clue of the game (SHOW BIZ STUPID ANSWERS $200): Julie Chen & Sara Gilbert give their view as 2 of the co-hosts of this talk show
Whitney: “What is The View?”
John: “I will also say ‘What is The View?’, because that was my answer!”
Needless to say: John went over to “V”ERBS, which he ran. Amazingly, though, there was no applause for him running the category!
At the time of the first break, the scores were:
John $4,400
Steven $1,400
Whitney $0
Every year, John goes to Las Vegas with a bunch of friends and impersonates Elvis!
The first clue out of the break (ANCIENT GREEKS $800) was the Daily Double! It was John’s to play. He bet $3,000. His clue: “Life of” this Greek, by the Roman physician Soranus, was published around 100 A.D.. John’s answer of Pericles dropped him down to Steven’s score. The rest of the round was pretty even between John and Steven; the scores at the end of round signal (with the bottom two clues in OF CLAY unplayed) were:
John $3,400
Steven $3,400
Whitney $600
DJ! round categories:
THE COUNTIES OF IRELAND
COMPUTER TERMS
NATIONAL ATHLETES
AWED WORDS
THAT AUTHOR’S MIXED UP! (Anagrams)
THE BARNES FOUNDATION
The Daily Double stayed hidden for awhile (though I ran NATIONAL ATHLETES and only missed $2000 in THAT AUTHOR’S MIXED UP!)
COMPUTER TERMS $1200 had the first Daily Double, this one was Steven’s to play! Scores:
John $5,800
Steven $5,800
Whitney $1,800
Steven bet $3,000. The clue: OS can stand for operating system or this movement to make operating systems & other programs freely available. Steven’s correct response put him at $8,800!
I had a feeling that THE BARNES FOUNDATION was going to be a video category. By the time we got to it, there was still a Daily Double unseen. It became seen at $800 (with the 3 bottom clues left to play)
Scores were:
Steven $10,800
John $10,600
Whitney $1,800
John to bet. I like exactly $5,200 as a bet here, for the following reasons:
1) It’s an $800 clue, so it should be easier;
2) If you’re correct, there is $4,800 on the board, so you guarantee the lead by $200 going into Final;
3) If you’re incorrect, you’re at exactly 50% of Steven’s score.
Also, Alex gave “less than a minute”, so feel free to stall here.
However, John bet just $300. His clue: “haere pape,” the inscription on “beach scene,” roughly means “she goes down to the fresh water.” But a literal translation is rather difficult, which indicates that this artist had a rather quirky grasp of the local language. John gave the correct response which gave him a $100 lead.
One more clue got in before the end-of-round signal came.
Scores going into Final:
John $12,100
Steven $10,800
Whitney $1,800
FJ! category: 20th CENTURY NAMES
FJ! clue: In 1942 Winston Churchill said “I can handle this peasant”; historians aren’t sure things turned out that way
Whitney 1800 – 0 = 1800
Steven 10800 + 8000 = 18800
John 12100 – 9501 = 2599
Both Whitney and John said “Hitler”. I said “Gandhi”.
I’m trying to figure out what Steven and Whitney were thinking with their bets. Both bets were not very good. Can we just retroactively make Shanna from yesterday the champ? However, Steven is the champ, and he’ll be back tomorrow to defend!
I’ll be back tomorrow with a new recap!
