Yesterday, Craig Cornish Jr. had me thinking he was gonna make the ToC list today. Today Mr. Trebek said Craig is “well-rounded” and “not in the mood to take prisoners” yesterday, and told Phil Lowe and Meredith Larson “You have your work cut out for you, but good luck!”

By the way, I like how Phil wrote his name in block letters. He went to Control after getting the first clue right, but Meredith swept the category. She’s having good luck so far! At the first break:

Craig wisely wagered on this clue in “N” the Atlas: “This largest Central American lake is separated from the Pacific Ocean by the 12-mile-wide Rivas isthmus.” He got it right.
I got this triple-stumper in You Floor Me: “Stay with me: Brits call the second floor the first floor & what we call the first floor they call this.”

I got this triple-stumper in File Under “Q”: “It’s a bon mot.” I got this one too in the same category: “Around 1970 this British fashion designer made hot pants popular.” I took umbrage when Mr. Trebek said the contestants were “too young” to remember this designer. No, they just don’t follow such things! And later, they weren’t too young (at least Phil wasn’t) to remember this, in 1963: “Coca-Cola introduced its first diet soda, this classic with a 3-letter name.” (Neither was I.)

Craig wagered 5000 on this clue: “In an April 9, 1965 exhibition game, Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in this ‘8th wonder of the world.'” I took a guess and got it right. I’d never heard of Craig’s response, but it was the correct response to the next clue! Craig knew its location then. Luckily he got the last clue of the round right, because then it was not a runaway. Craig seemed to know it, too, as it looked like he pumped his fist.

The Final Jeopardy category was State Capitals. I already felt pretty good about this. Here’s the clue: “It’s the southern city in which the building seen here is located; counting the panels may help.”
(I was too lazy to get up from the computer.) This was a triple-stumper, but Meredith had the correct state. Phil lost 1600, Craig lost everything, and Meredith lost 2000. So we don’t add Craig to the ToC list today, and that’s too bad.
